Welcome to Durham Islamic STEM Academy
Durham Islamic STEM Academy uses the Ontario Ministry of Education Elementary Curriculum. In addition, DISA integrates a cross-curricular holistic educational approach that combines Islamic studies and STEM subjects with nature-based experiential learning through all academic subjects. Educators are trained to use multiple instructional strategies to spark students' curiosity and scaffold their learning.
The Islamic curriculum focuses on the learning of key Muslim knowledge, values, skills and attitudes. The Durham Islamic STEM Academy curriculum focuses on essential knowledge, Islamic beliefs, Fiqh (rituals and rulings), Islamic history, contemporary issues, lifestyle, and community and spiritual and personal development.
At Durham Islamic STEM Academy, we offer a STEM-integrated and high-impact education by leveraging the latest educational technologies in the Edtech industry. Incorporating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) into elementary education has become increasingly vital in preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century.
Our program has also taken inspiration from nature-based learning/teachings in Islam, which holds significant importance in Islamic teachings, as the natural world is viewed as a manifestation of Allah SWT's creation and divine wisdom. Islamic teachings emphasize the importance of observing, appreciating, and respecting the natural world as a means of deepening one's faith and understanding of Allah SWT's greatness.
Social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum at DISA focuses on teaching students essential skills for managing emotions, building positive relationships, and making responsible decisions. We have divided SEL curriculum into two main branches of self-awareness and community building.
DISA follow Ontario Ministry of Education elementary curriculum expectation for Language and Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and physical education subjects.
DISA after-school program is a structured and supervised program that takes place after the regular school day ends. These programs offer a variety of activities and services to enrich students' lives, provide academic support, and ensure their safety during the hours when parents or guardians may still be at work. After-school programs can vary widely in focus, from providing homework help and tutoring to offering recreational activities, sports, arts and crafts, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities, and more.
